It’s a mix of good news for some and bad news for others this week in the wide world of poker. It’s bad news for Uruguayan footballing ace Luis Suarez who found out that due to his actions in a recent World Cup game against Italy, one of his most recent sponsors, 888poker, had decided to cut all ties with him just four weeks after they announced the deal.
So while Suarez takes another hit to the pocket, another player was celebrating a fortunate win.
Just 24 hours after their new game was released, Full Tilt Poker were paying out a $15,000 jackpot to one lucky player on their Sit & Go Jackpot games. For more detail, check out our story below:
Less than a day after Full Tilt Poker introduced their new jackpot sit & go tournaments (a renamed version of the Twister tournaments you can play on sites like Bet365 Poker amongst others), one 23-year-old student from Moscow was celebrating an immediate and life-changing win.
With the new game on Full Tilt (and exactly the same as on Twister Poker) players can buy in for $1, $2, $5 and $10 per game and they face two other opponents in a three way face-off, winner takes all. However, the prize fund is decided by a random, with players able to win any amount from double their buy in, up to in Full Tilt’s case $15,000.
That is precisely what happened on June 25, less than a day after the game's release, when a player known as VAS24 from Russia, now known to be a 23-year-old student named Ailsa, became the first jackpot winner of the new game. She remarked that she had always been a keen player of sit & go’s and decided to give the new Jackpot tables a try when she saw them in the lobby.
Ailsa explained that she had honed her skills playing a few games before she was randomly granted the chance to win the big jackpot. She achieved this with a hand of Q J unsuited against A K suited, when a flop featuring two queens saw her eliminate her final opponent. The good news is, losing players on the jackpot table also receive a significant payout with third place receiving $2000 and 2nd place $3,000.
A day later, a player from the Czech Republic played the $1 Jackpot game and won the jackpot available at this level of $1,500. The winner, known as “PackieAA” had only been playing for a grand total of 15 minutes and had played just three games prior to his win. You can play Jackpot Sit & Go’s at Full Tilt or a host of similar Twister Poker games at a wide range of other top poker sites including Bet365 Poker.
The FIFA World Cup is having a big influence on the poker scene at the moment. Last week we brought you news that Scotsman Dale Philip had lost his lucrative sponsorship deal with PokerStars due to excessively celebrating Holland’s thumping victory over Spain, while competing in a tournament in the beautiful resort of Marbella.
And this week, yet another famous name has lost their sponsorship deal - this time with 888 Poker - although this time it is their newest recruit, Uruguayan soccer ace Luis Suarez, who has bitten the dust, among other things.
For those of you uninterested in the World Cup Finals in Brazil, Suarez is the Liverpool and Uruguayan striker who was banned twice for biting an opponent - once when he was a player with Ajax and then a couple of years later when he took a nibble out of Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic during a game at Anfield. Suarez served a 10-match ban for that second offence however at the World Cup, he was up to his old tricks again.
In a game with Italy, Suarez seemed to bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder. FIFA took a dim view of the incident and banned Suarez for nine international matches and imposed a four month ban on all footballing activities with immediate effect, meaning Suarez was not even allowed to stay at the World Cup with his team mates.
Given the severity of the offence and Suarez past misdemeanours, 888 Poker, who only announced Suarez as their newest member of Team 888 Poker just prior to the World Cup, swiftly moved to cancel their deal with the player.
“Regrettably, following his actions during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect,” read a statement put out by 888.
Suarez had only been with the company for four weeks and had completed a couple of video diaries of his time at the World Cup for 888poker. His most notable contribution being after his two goals had condemned England to defeat.
So far, 888poker have not been moved to say whether they will appoint any other ambassador to replace Suarez.
