PokerStars WCOOP High-Roller, WPT on the Move, and More

Posted: September 23rd, 2013

PokerStars WCOOPThis week the online poker news headlines were dominated by the start of the Full Tilt Poker remission process and the launch of the WSOP.com website in Nevada, but there were plenty of other important stories that occurred during the past week.

In this week’s column we’ll get you up to speed on these stories that you may have missed while filing your Full Tilt Poker claim or signing up for the WSOP.com including WCOOP, WPT Championship, and GUKPT news.

WPT Championship heading to the Borgata

This week the World Poker Tour (which is owned by iGaming giant bwin.party) announced they would be moving their WPT $25k Championship from its home at the Bellagio to the Atlantic City casino the Borgata. The WPT Championship has been held at the Bellagio since the tour launched in 2002.

So why the venue change? Bwin.party has signed a partnership agreement with the Borgata to provide online gaming in New Jersey, which makes the move of the WPT Championship to the Borgata seem like a no-brainer. Still, there are likely other reasons as well, including the dwindling attendance numbers for the tournament in recent years, as well as some player complaints over the state of the Bellagio Casino, once considered the crown jewel of the poker world.

If you’re not already a player at bwin you can take advantage of their $50 no deposit bankroll offer.

Martin Jacobson chops WCOOP High-Roller

One of the most prestigious tournaments of the PokerStars WCOOP tournament series is the two-day, $10,300 High-Roller event, which attracts a very pro-heavy field, and usually crowns a well-known winner.

However, this year the winner of the tournament was an unknown German player who uses the screen-name “MauriceSch.” “MauriceSch” ended up chopping the top two prizes with poker pro Martin Jacobson, and with the win he secured an extra $50,000 and the coveted WCOOP win.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:

  1. MauriceSch -- $533,200.00

  2. Martin “M.nosbocaJ” Jacobson -- $480,000.00

  3. uri1013 -- $327,800.00

  4. lasagnaaammm -- $238,400.00

  5. OLD TIME GIN -- $163,900.00

  6. Andrey “Kroko-dill” Zaichenko --$119,200.00

  7. Frenzuh -- $89,400.00

  8. Str8$$$Homey -- $74,500.00

Julian Thew among Chip-Leaders at GUKPT

Julian Thew already has a record three GUKPT Main Event titles on his resume, but it doesn’t look like the Sky Poker pro is content with staying on that number. In July Thew made the final table of the GUKPT Walsall Main Event, and this weekend he was among the chip-leaders after Day 1 of the GUKPT Main Event in Manchester.

Thew would eventually bust late on Day 2 of the GUKPT Manchester, finishing in 25th place. Still, Thew remains the most accomplished GUKPT player in poker history.

Take advantage of Sky Poker’s £10 instant bankroll and perhaps you’ll have what it takes to play against Julian Thew on the site.
